Vision, integrity and strength
Washi was founded on a single commitment — to walk alongside micro-entrepreneurs, farmers and community people across Uganda.
Our name
Why an eagle?
Our name, Washi, is inspired by the Japanese word for eagle — 鷲 — a timeless symbol of vision, integrity and strength. The eagle sees clearly at distance, holds steady in rough air, and climbs by using the conditions rather than fighting them. That is the posture we want for every business we finance.
Guided by Japanese principles of reliability and community-first service, Washi provides transparent, accessible financial solutions and practical guidance. Together we empower your hard work, protect your progress, and lift every enterprise toward its fullest potential.
We pair global best practice in governance and risk management with an empathetic, first-hand understanding of Ugandan market dynamics and cultural realities. Local roots. Universal standards.
Our slogan
Rise Higher, Together
Three words that carry the whole idea: your business climbing, ours climbing with it, and neither of us doing it alone.
Our vision
Growth anchored in dependability
To anchor business growth through dependable financial solutions that enable every hardworking business to rise with clarity, dignity and steady strength.
Our mission
Capital, plus the guidance to use it
To empower micro-entrepreneurs, small businesses and agricultural communities across Uganda through transparent, accessible financial services and guidance that drive sustainable growth.
Core values
The four pillars we are built on
Pillar one
Unvarnished Transparency
No hidden costs
We speak in plain, straightforward language. Every fee, every interest calculation and every repayment term is disclosed to you upfront — with zero hidden charges and no surprise deductions.
Pillar two
Preservation of Dignity
Partners, not dependents
We honour the hustle and ambition of every entrepreneur, farmer and market trader. Borrowing from Washi is a business partnership between equals, conducted with mutual respect.
Pillar three
Steadfast Reliability
Stability in every season
Like an anchor, Washi stands firm beside our clients through prosperous times and economic storms alike. We offer predictable, dependable solutions you can count on.
Pillar four
Shared Prosperity
Growth beyond credit
We measure our success only by the real progress created in the households and businesses we serve. That is why guidance always travels alongside the capital.
Where we are going
Our objectives
Broaden financial inclusion
Expand accessible, non-predatory micro-credit and working capital to micro-entrepreneurs, women traders and agricultural communities in underserved regions of Uganda.
Promote sustainable enterprise growth
Pair every disbursement with practical financial guidance and capacity-building, so capital becomes lasting wealth rather than a temporary bridge.
Set the benchmark for transparency
Eliminate hidden charges, fine-print penalties and ambiguous terms — and become Uganda's most open and reliable microfinance institution.
Maintain portfolio health through partnership
Build trust-based relationships that keep repayment strong while always upholding client dignity, including when times are hard.
Modern operations, personal service
Use streamlined processing and mobile-friendly tools to cut waiting times — without ever losing the face-to-face relationship at the centre of our model.
How we conduct business
Our operating principles
These are the rules our own staff are measured against — and what you are entitled to expect from every Washi employee you meet.
Client dignity above all
Credit officers and field staff treat borrowers as equal commercial partners. Aggressive, humiliating or harassing collection practices are never permitted, under any circumstances.
Radical clarity in lending
Before any agreement is signed, every customer receives a single-page Key Facts Statement explaining the total cost of credit, the repayment schedule and all terms in plain, easy-to-understand language.
Responsible capital delivery
Loans are tailored strictly to your repayment capacity and business cash flow, to prevent over-indebtedness and protect your household.
Disciplined stewardship
Rooted in Japanese principles of long-term commitment and meticulous management, we run our portfolio with rigour, stability and no compromise on integrity.
Local roots, universal standards
Global best practice in governance and risk management, applied with genuine understanding of Ugandan market realities.
Independent grievance handling
An independent grievance officer, outside the normal management line, receives concerns from clients and staff alike and reports directly to senior leadership. How to raise a concern.
Who we serve
The businesses behind Uganda's markets
Washi was designed for people the conventional banking system tends to overlook — not because they are poor risks, but because they hold no conventional collateral.
Women in micro-enterprise
Market traders, retailers, food vendors and service providers running established businesses that earn a daily livelihood.
Small business owners
Enterprises that have outgrown a micro loan and need finance sized to a larger, steadier operation.
Agricultural communities
Smallholder farmers and agri-traders whose cash needs follow a season rather than a week.
Young entrepreneurs
Young Ugandans building an enterprise and employment for themselves and others.
Come and meet us
The best way to understand how Washi works is to talk to a loan officer in your own community.
