Work that reaches people

Washi is built by field staff who know their communities. If that is the kind of work you want to do, we would like to hear from you.

Why Washi

A different standard to work to

Microfinance can be done well or done badly, and the difference shows up in how staff are asked to behave when a client falls behind. At Washi, aggressive or humiliating collection is a disciplinary offence, not a technique. Our people are trained to see borrowers as commercial partners, to explain terms until they are genuinely understood, and to size a loan to what a business can actually carry. If that is how you want to work, you will recognise yourself here. We invest in training, we promote from the field, and we hold everyone — at every level — to the same code of conduct.

Where you could fit

Roles across our branch network

Most of our people work in branches, close to the clients they serve. A typical branch team is a Branch Manager, one or two Team Leaders, four to five Loan Officers and support staff.

Loan Officer

The heart of Washi. You work inside a community — surveying it, forming groups, verifying businesses, running weekly meetings and coaching clients through their cycle. It is demanding, relational, outdoor work for people who like being trusted.

Team Leader

Supporting and supervising a set of loan officers, spot-checking quality, and stepping into disbursement briefings. A natural first step up from the field.

Branch Manager

Running a branch end to end: approvals, disbursement, cash discipline, portfolio quality and the conduct of your team. Accountable for both the numbers and the standard of client treatment.

Area & Regional Manager

Overseeing a cluster of branches, surveying and opening new areas, and carrying our operating standards into new parts of Uganda.

Head office & support functions

Operations, finance and accounts, human resources, internal audit, risk and technology — the disciplines that keep a lender safe and a promise credible.

Graduate and entry-level

We recruit and train people new to microfinance. What we cannot train is integrity and the willingness to walk a market in the rain.

What we look for

Character first

Unbending honesty

You will handle other people’s money, in cash, in the field. Nothing else matters if this is missing.

Respect that survives pressure

Anyone can be courteous on disbursement day. We care how you speak to a client in her fourth week of arrears.

Genuine local knowledge

You understand the markets, languages and rhythms of the area you would work in.

Discipline with detail

Registers, passbooks and cash counts must reconcile — every day, without exception.

Willingness to teach

Half the job is explaining something clearly to someone who has been talked down to by lenders before.
